When I first suggested the idea of a Face It TOGETHER Sioux Falls golf tournament, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
What started as a suggestion to raise money, Solving Addiction on the Green has become an anticipated event among many avid golfers and community members in Sioux Falls. It’s also going to be put on by the Face It TOGETHER Fargo-Moorhead team, which I’m incredibly excited about! I am so pleased this event is making its way to a new community.
This year, we had 30 teams play, including 24 The First Tee of South Dakota participants. We raised about $18,000, all of which will help us provide free peer coaching to anyone in the community.
Solving Addiction on the Green is different from most golf tournaments for several reasons. We eliminate the things that people don’t like about golf tournaments – they take too long, cost too much and are too difficult – in order to provide the community with a unique, family friendly event.
We play nine, rather than 18 holes, and our choices of tee times offer flexibility.
Additionally, our partnership with The First Tee really brings the event together. These kids always bring value to their golf teams and to the event as a whole. We’re so lucky to have them!
Coralee Jorgensen, The First Tee of South Dakota Executive Director, said the organization is very grateful to be included in the annual event.
“Those that have played it in the past always want to return because they’ve had such a good experience and so much fun,” she said. “Our kids get out and they get to play on a golf course, they get to be with adults and they have to start to use some of the core values that they are learning in their classes.”
She and I both hear again and again that the adults really enjoy the experience as well.
As someone who’s been golfing for 50 years, I can say with confidence that I haven’t seen anything like our tournament in Sioux Falls. It really is a special event, and the teams that come back year after year are proof of that.
To me, putting on Solving Addiction on the Green has been a challenging, inspiring and enjoyable process. It’s been fun to create an event I haven’t seen before. It’s been great to see friends, acquaintances and others support me and this wonderful organization. Lastly, it’s served as a welcome reminder of how far I’ve come in my own wellness from addiction. In fact, I give a lot of credit to golf – it’s the activity I immersed myself in during my early stages of recovery.
Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event possible! I hope to see you next year!
